Founded in 1996, the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig investigates fundamental questions arising from natural and engineering sciences and economics.
The interaction between mathematics and the sciences forms the central point of research at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MIS) in Leipzig.

Alexander Shnirelman - Topics in Mathematical Fluid Dynamics / Part 7
The Ideal Incompressible Fluid is the most fundamental model of a continuous media. In this model, the configuration space of the fluid is the group D of volume- preserving diffeomorphisms of the flow domain M. D is an infinite-dimensonal manifold endowed with a weak Riemannian metric (the kinetic energy). The fluid flows (in the absence of the external forces) are the geodesics in this metric. There are two basic problems about the geodesics:
Find the geodesic trajectory for the given initial fluid configuration and velocity (the initial-value problem);
Find the geodesic for given fluid configurations at two different time moments, say at t=0 and t=1 (the 2-point problem).
Unfortunately we had an audio equipment failure. The sound will be back at 20:29.

Svitlana Mayboroda (ETH Zürich) Wave Localization Waves of all kinds permeate our world. We are surrounded by light (electromagnetic waves), sound (acoustic waves), and mechanical vibrations. Quantum mechanics revealed that, at the atomic level, all matter has a wavelike character. And it was only recently that classical gravitational waves were detected. At the cutting edge of today's science,...

This was really motivational and helpful. Thanks for delivering this interview and thanks to June Huh.
Wow the sound is awful!
Well played Hans Kim!
Bad audio quality
wonderful
Not sure why I clicked on this, but I am so glad that I did. What an inspiration he is. The best part? I suspect he would not think of himself in that way. And to attribute a lot, even most, of his success to luck, very humble. Boy did I need to hear this as I am feeling stuck in the journey I am on (related to mathematics). I am renewed!
This guy's need desperately a couple of good mics!
The audio quality is painfully bad.
Is it the month of May? June. Huh?
Nima arkani é um, visionário.
such uninspiring questions... and yet he still managed to give interesting answers to many of them
This is very informative!! Thank you!
love it. im not a mathematician or anywhere in academia, a film student actually, and i love there's this poetic-ness in the way june speaks.
When I'm met with a math problem that I don't know how to solve, I just go "Huh?"
nice sound quality! lmao
Unfortunately we had an equipment failure and had to fall back to in-built mics and sound reconstruction to even be able to get this out of it. Sorry about that. We've added subtitles though.
👍👍
Excellent. Thank you. **For anyone concerned about the audio quality, I have found that turning on the closed captions works quite well.
Everyone talking about the audio 🙄🤦🏻♀️
Thanks.
Allegations of serious fraud involving doctoral theses in physics have emerged at the MPI MiS in Leipzig. It is alleged that Max Planck fellows have copied numerous pages of articles from their professors, who also act as supervisors at the MPI MiS. The university is already investigating the matter. Why is nothing being heard from the MPI MiS? It is important to note that the Max Planck Society financed the years of fraud and paid the doctoral students generous salaries.
We are aware of the allegations. However, it is policy of the MPI MiS not to comment on ongoing University procedures.
Warum hört man vom MPI MiS nichts?
It seems like everyone is wearing mics. Did the mics fail, or is using the room sound an error on the video production side? Edit: I'm about halfway in, and even at maximum volume on my laptop it's difficult to make out some of what is being said. If there is any way the audio can be fixed (or even improved) and the video re-uploaded, we would all be greatly appreciative!
Unfortunately we had an equipment failure and had to fall back to in-built mics and sound reconstruction to even be able to get this out of it. Sorry about that. We've added subtitles though.
It's a shame that the audio quality is so bad

Thank you so much, and thanks for interviewing him!
@@mpiMathSci I recommend reproducing the audio quality by a profesional and upload it again, cause It's a real problem

Mr. Huh, Poet turned Mathematician is one of my inspirations in today’s world!
Rather now he’s both poet and mathematician 😊
Probably not necessary to go on tangent about race relations. Either way, I wish them success on their goal of putting their statistics applications on the map.
Legend !
love and enjoy every piece of math ( Algabriac Statistics) you produce ...
Excellent discussion.. also it would be good to organise discussions on emergence of India's right-wing presence on social media.
Interesting.
Great talk. Thank you.
optimized calibration of combustion engine link please ?
Great. It's also a very enjoyable book
interesting! thank you :)
Hello, I started reading the book and I wanted to know if I could find the solutions of the exercises (chapter 1), since I cannot do all of them by myself. Can you help me ?
Dear Jona, unfortunately there are no solution sheets available for this book. Perhaps you can try a forum or study group.
Hiw can i have all lectures
You can find all lectures in this series in the "Twelve lectures on Tropical Geometry" playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLRy_Pn1LtSpfYE39TuCZrJAi7-0z44sQB.html

I'm trying to guess how Petri Net theory and BPMN knowledge can be reused. There's so much overlap that creating yet another formal graphical language to describe games seems overkill.
Go Bernd!
Is there a technical talk available on the new structures?
A paper is in the works, after that Noémie will probably prepare something. There is a talk on operads though: www.mis.mpg.de/calendar/lectures/2020/abstract-31522.html
